Aria

Aria. The only French-language periodical in North America devoted to opera. It was first published in Montreal in January 1978 under the name Bulletin de l'ASLQ(Les Amis de la Scène lyrique du Québec). The title Aria was adopted with the appearance of volume 2 in December 1978. It is a quarterly review which contains in-depth articles on opera, interviews with young artists and well-known figures of the operatic world, portraits of Canadian and foreign artists, articles on the large-scale European festivals, on Canadian musical organizations, reviews of books, records, and performances, and a calendar of events. Daniel Moisan was coordinator the first year, then chief editor until 1983 when Maryse Angrignon Sirois succeeded him as director and chief editor. In 1990 Claude Routhier became chief editor. With the publication of the 25th issue of the journal in the spring of 1984 (vol 7, no. 1), the Société d'édition de la revue Aria announced the establishment of the Aria scholarship offered annually to the best student of the Atelier lyrique of the Opéra de Montréal. Aria can thus assist young singers who possess the skills necessary to undertake a professional career. The winners have been Yolande Parent (1985), Grégoire Legendre (1986), Robert MacLaren (1987), Philip Ens (1988), Hélène Fortin (1989), Desmond Byrne (1990), and Élaine Lemieux (1991).

Interruption of publication at the end of 1991 became permanent, and the last issue was Vol 24, No. 3, Autumn 1991.
