Cyrus Stephen Eaton

Cyrus Stephen Eaton, financier, philanthropist (b at Pugwash, NS 27 Dec 1883; d at Cleveland, Ohio 9 May 1979). Educated at McMaster, Eaton moved to the US in 1900. He became involved in public utilities and after 1925 in steel, eventually forming Republic Steel.

Cyrus Stephen Eaton, financier, philanthropist (b at Pugwash, NS 27 Dec 1883; d at Cleveland, Ohio 9 May 1979). Educated at McMaster, Eaton moved to the US in 1900. He became involved in public utilities and after 1925 in steel, eventually forming Republic Steel. He also had investments in Canada, including Steep Rock Iron Ore. In 1950 Eaton and C.D. HOWE quarrelled over administration of the company. They became estranged and Eaton later helped Howe's political opponents in Port Arthur [Thunder Bay]. Eaton became best known for his sponsorship of a series of conferences at his birthplace, PUGWASH, at which he attempted to bring together scientists and public figures from East and West to foster international conciliation. For his efforts he received the Lenin Peace Prize in 1960.
