Eldon Leslie Brown

Eldon Leslie Brown, mining engineer, executive (b at Toronto 19 Aug 1900; d at Brechin, Ont 20 Feb 1998). After working as an engineer for the Mond Nickel Co, Brown joined Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd in 1927, becoming president and managing director in 1946. He also served as manager of God's Lake Gold Mines Ltd, consulting engineer of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines and VP and general manager of Michipicoten Iron Mines Ltd.

A brilliant mine engineer, he played a key role in the discovery and development of Sherritt Gordon's Lynn Lake nickel-cobalt mine, brought into production in the early 1950s; employed airborne geophysical equipment to locate the Fox mine in 1960; and encouraged the development of complex chemical and metallurgical extraction processes. He retired as chairman in 1968. He served as president of the Canadian Metal Mining Association in 1950 and received the University of Toronto's Engineering Alumni Medal in 1954 and the Selwyn G. Blaylock Medal of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum in 1968. In 1980 Brown was elected to the University of Toronto's Alumni Hall of Distinction.
