The Financial Post was a newspaper founded by John Bayne MACLEAN, who also founded MACLEAN'S magazine. Intended to provide reliable investment information, especially to the Toronto business community, The Financial Post published its first issue on 12 January 1912. In 1987 it was published weekly at 777 Bay Street, Toronto, by MACLEAN HUNTER LIMITED. In October 1987 it was announced that the paper had been bought by the Toronto Sun Publishing Corp, a subsidiary of Maclean Hunter.

In July of 1998, Conrad Black's Southam Inc purchased the Financial Post from Sun Media in exchange for the Hamilton Spectator, the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, the Guelph Mercury and the Cambridge Reporter. Southam received $150 million in the exchange. Southam integrated the Financial Post into its new National Post, featuring the Financial Post as a component of the paper. In 2003, Southam was absorbed into CANWEST GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS, which was in turn taken over by POSTMEDIA NETWORK, INC in 2010.
