Galipeau Musique Inc

Galipeau Musique Inc. Chain of stores and music schools established in Quebec and Ontario by Roméo Galipeau (b Montreal 9 Jun 1929; teaching certificate, University of Montreal, 1947). Galipeau studied at the Conservatoire national of Montreal with Eugène Lapierre (organ and piano) and Marcel Saucier (violin), privately with Claude Champagne (composition), Georges-Emile Tanguay (harmony), and in Paris with Léon Algazi (composition).

Galipeau founded the firm Galipeau Musique in 1958 in Montreal as a combined store and school. The formula brought rapid growth, and by 1978 there were 28 Galipeau branches in Quebec and two in Ontario, whose exclusive supplier was Galipeau Musique Inc, in Boisbriand.

In each instance the store offered a selection of instruments and sheet music, and the adjoining school gave music courses recognized by the Quebec Ministry of Education, which issued certificates of study. In 1984, Galipeau Musique Inc. ceased its activities but Roméo Galipeau continued to manage the original École de musique Galipeau.

Galipeau also was president 1975-84 of Eastern Musical Distributors Ltd, a publishing house that also distributed material of other publishers, in particular of Publications Chant de mon pays, which specialized in songs by Quebec chansonniers and pop composers.
