Jacob Penner
Jacob Penner, radical politician (b in Russia 12 Aug 1880; d at Winnipeg 28 Aug 1965). Already a Marxist when he arrived in Winnipeg in 1904, he helped found the Social-Democratic Party and was prominent in both the anti-conscription movement in 1917-18 and the WINNIPEG GENERAL STRIKE. A founder of the COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA, he was its western organizer for years. In 1933 he was elected to the Winnipeg City Council representing the North End, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1960. At times he was the only Communist member of any elected body in North America. His son Roland became Manitoba's attorney-general in December 1981.
