James Morrow Walsh, police officer, territorial commissioner (b at Prescott, Canada W 22 May 1840; d at Brockville, Ont 25 July 1905). As inspector in the North-West Mounted Police 1873-83, he gave his name to Fort Walsh. He dealt firmly but fairly with Sitting Bull and his followers, who had crossed into Canada in 1876 after the defeat of Custer at Little Bighorn (Montana), and he became friendly with the Sioux chief. In 1883 he established the Dominion Coke, Coal and Transportation Co in Winnipeg. With the onset of the Klondike Gold Rush he returned to the force as superintendent and was commissioner of the Yukon District 1897-98.
