Jean Le Buis. Organist, teacher, composer, b Verdun (Montreal) 30 Nov 1956; premier prix analysis (CMM) 1980, premier prix organ (CMM) 1981, premier prix organ (Rueil-Malmaison Cons) 1983. After studies at the CMM with Gaston Arel, Gilles Tremblay, Madeleine Martin, and Raymond Daveluy, he went to Europe 1981-3 and became a student of Marie-Claire Alain at the Rueil-Malmaison Cons (France) and of Montserrat Torrens at the Académie d'été in Salamanca (Spain). He won first prize at the 1979 John Robb Organ Competition and third prize at the 1981 Rome International Music Competition. He has given several concerts in Canada and in Europe, namely in France, in Germany and in Switzerland, and has frequently played on CBC broadcasts.
As a composer Le Buis has written over 50 works, mostly for organ and in which the influence of Jehan Alain is notably present. Among these are a Suite pour le temps de Noël for organ and narrator (1983-6), a Suite for organ (1987), Variations on 'C'est la belle Françoise' for pedal alone (1987), a Suite sur le nom de Raymond Daveluy for organ (1990), and Quatre Préludes for piano (1991), a CBC commission. In 1984, he began teaching at the Conservatoire de Val-d'Or and was its director 1986-8. In 1988 he was appointed director of studies at the CMM.
