Althouse, John George
John George Althouse, educator (b at Ailsa Craig, Ont 10 Apr 1889; d at Temagami, Ont 2 Aug 1956). Educated at Unversity of Toronto, he was appointed headmaster of the University of Toronto Schools in 1923, dean of the Ontario College of Education 1934 and chief director of education for Ontario in 1944. Though a supporter of moderate progressivist influences during the 1930s, he became the principal agent for Premier George DREW's conservative shift in Ontario education in the 1940s. President of the Canadian Education Association 1948-49, he was the author of The Ontario Teacher: An Historical Sketch of Progress, 1800-1910 (1929).
