Lake Winnipegosis, 5370 km2, 195 km long, elev 254 m, maximum depth 12 m, Canada's eleventh-largest lake, is located in west-central Manitoba. It drains approximately 49 825 km2 of western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, drawing most of its waters from the Manitoba Escarpment - in particular Riding Mount, Duck Mount, Porcupine Hills and the Pasquia Hills - and discharging them through the Waterhen River at an average annual rate of 80.9 m3/s into Lake Manitoba, and thence into Lake Winnipeg. Its interesting name is derived from 2 sources: win-nipi, Cree for "murky waters," and the suffix osis, meaning "little."
