Mandel, Miriam

Miriam Mandel, née Minovitch, poet (b at Rockglen, Sask 1930; d at Edmonton 13 Feb 1982). An English graduate from the University of Saskatchewan, Mandel began writing poetry in her late 30s, shortly after her 20-year marriage with author Eli MANDEL dissolved. She long suffered from manic depression, which plagued her until her death by suicide. Mandel's poetry explores her personal suffering with courage and honesty. Her first collection, Lions at her Face (1973), won the Governor General's Award. It was followed by 2 other collections. Sheila Watson paid posthumous tribute to Mandel by editing her work in Collected Poems of Miriam Mandel (1984).
