And eventually, somebody did open it up and it was full of German Lugers. But nobody would touch it.
Well, the one time in Italy, there was a square wooden box, just laying there in a cemetery. Nobody would touch it, afraid it might be bombed or something. Who would think it was full of German Lugers. And eventually, somebody did open it up and it was full of German Lugers. But nobody would touch it. I often wondered why I didn’t get the unit to come down with a long rope or something and haul it out of there. If it was going to explode, it would have exploded by the time we got back to the unit. Then we’d all had a German Luger. Never thought of that. Took us about four days to get there. Four days to lay around the bottom of the ship. Seasick. You get so that after you’ve been on ship for a while, you wanted to get up on deck and walk around. You get over it. And overseas, you know, you got dead people around, you get so they don’t mean anything. It was the same way after you got home. People going to die, they die. It sounds silly.
