I was on the parade square, took basic training twice in two different places so I know all about discipline and everything, learnt it the hard way.
What can I tell you? Well, I’ll tell you one thing, the first night, I was homesick. In depot, I was in [Military District] Number Six in Halifax [Nova Scotia] in the depot and that’s the first time that I was ever away from home. And you know, I was homesick at that night. After that, I got used to it. And I didn’t mind it then. So you know, it was a good experience as I went through it, I’m glad I done it, I’m glad that I got in really because it learnt me a lot. It taught me discipline, that’s for sure. On the parade square, I was on the parade square, took basic training twice in two different places so I know all about discipline and everything, learnt it the hard way. One instance that I remember, one young fellow was with us and he was on guard duty and they inspected his rifle and he opened his rifle and an empty shell came out. So he got discharged for that because he joined the army underage, lied about his age and he was underage. And that’s what happened, so he was discharged right away. And because you don’t put no shell in your rifle and when you open it up, it’s got to be clean and no shells, empty shells or anything. And he had an empty shell for some reason or other, I don’t know but he was fooling around, where he even got the empty shell. But I went, that’s one thing I’ll never forget.
