We went over by ship, just that regiment [1 RCHA] and a few replacements. But you had nothing to do on the boat, and every – the food was down about the fifth floor and that was, by the time you got down there, you weren’t eating, everybody was – it was a rough trip, a lotta sea sickness, but other than that, it was fine. The thing I really remember – I lived in Ridgetown [Ontario] and a fellow and I went to the same church, and when I – we went up on trucks up to B Echelon, and who’s standing there waiting for me, ‘cause he was a clerk, was my buddy from Ridgetown. So all those miles, we finally had a talk, but that was amazing that you would run all those miles and come out with one of your buddies from home.

I was an ammunition truck driver. We’d run mostly at night, but it seemed night time was when the guns were doing all their shooting; they were always running outta shells. Well, we didn’t carry any rifles. They’d had a couple of accidents with rifles going off in the trucks, so we were told just to leave ‘em:  “They're gonna hit you. You don’t have to worry anyway. If they want the ammunition, why, you’ll be the first guy gone.” Other than that… Oh, and we had trouble with Americans. Lots of times at night if you had a special order, for some special ammunition, you had to get across the river and Americans controlled the bridge, and they were a trigger happy bunch. Yeah, there was one time I was going down, had to go quite a way, went across – I was cleared all the way, ‘cause of an emergency.  Got to the bridge, I wasn’t cleared, I guess. Anyway, they shot at me, but I didn’t have any ammunition on. I didn’t get hit, so I guess that was all right.
