We didn’t know what was going to happen, we didn’t care. We were young and it’s something we never done before.
I don’t know, I just decided it would be alright, if we go overseas or over there or they send us back for a refit and then we’ve got to leave quicker than the army. The army stayed there until the war was over. And fellows start talking about that, the enlistment in the navy kept going up. I said “go home? a year? 12 months.” and they went home. We didn’t know what was going to happen, we didn’t care. We were young and it’s something we never done before. He [the German U-boats] was underwater, we were on top, that’s what we always said. We detected him before he detected us and we got our depth charges over, and there was no hope for the Germans. My grandfather wanted me to stay home [from the war] because I was her pet I would help her around the house and all that when I wasn’t at school. But I know she prayed for my safety.
