Donald Newman

Donald Newman, broadcast journalist (b at Winnipeg, 28 Oct 1940). Don Newman was, until he retired in 2009, the CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION's senior parliamentary editor and, for 20 years, host of its highly rated public affairs show Capital Report on it's national news network Newsworld.

Don Newman was, until he retired in 2009, the CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION's senior parliamentary editor and, for 20 years, host of its highly rated public affairs show Capital Report on it's national news network Newsworld. Newman, a banker's son, was raised in London (England), Montréal and Winnipeg. He began his career in 1960 as a copy boy with the now defunct Winnipeg Tribune, before being employed by a series of television stations in Western Canada, including CJAY-Winnipeg, CKCK-Regina, and CKRC-Winnipeg.

He joined the Globe & Mail in Toronto in 1967, moved to the Globe's parliamentary bureau in Ottawa in 1969, then was hired by the Canadian Television Network in 1971. The following year Newman opened CTV's Washington Bureau. In 1976 he joined the CBC's Washington Bureau, and in 1979 was sent to Edmonton as the CBC's national Alberta correspondent. In 1981 he became the host of This Week in Parliament and Capital Report, and in 1989 the host of Newsworld.

He was the first recipient of the Charles Lynch Award in 1997 and received the ORDER OF CANADA in 1999. He was the 2008 recipient of the Gordon Sinclair Lifetime Achievement Gemini Award (see GEMINI AWARDS). Newman is also a lifetime member of the PARLIAMENTARY PRESS GALLERY in Ottawa.
