Ontario Economic Council

The Ontario Economic Council (1968-85) was established to advise the Executive Council of Ontario on ways to contribute to public awareness, discussion and understanding of socioeconomic issues of special significance to the people of Ontario. The council was composed primarily of economists and business persons and kept a small staff in Toronto. Studies examined a range of issues, including the elimination of rent controls, the possibility of user charges for social services, the establishment of a North American free-trade area (which it advocated) and the appropriate role of industrial policy and income distribution.
