Pintendre, Quebec, population 7,171 (2019), 6,209 (2001 census). Originally incorporated in 1901, Pintendre is now part of Lévis since 2002. The area is located on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River. Pintendre is situated on the agricultural plain next to the Appalachian mountains. (See Mountain Range.) Three rivers flow through the area’s boundaries: Etchemin, la Scie and des Couture.
History
Pintendre’s name most likely comes from the forests of supple (French, tendre) white pine (French, pin) that once covered the area. Pintendre was originally incorporated under the name Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague-de-Pintendre. The shortened version of the name was adopted in 1986. In 2002, Pintendre was merged in with the city of Lévis.
Economy
Agriculture was historically the most important economic activity. The lumber industry was also an important sector.
Today, agriculture is still prominent in Pintendre’s economy. The area is also known for horse breeding. Other important industries are textile manufacturing and the distribution of furniture hardware.
