Saint-Émile, Quebec, is a former city and a current sector of Quebec City. On 1 January 2002, the city of Saint-Émile was amalgamated into Quebec City alongside several other cities and municipalities in the region. Now, Saint-Émile identifies the sector of Quebec City which corresponds to the old city of Saint-Émile’s territory.
Description
With an area of about area 8.36 km2, Saint-Émile is situated 25 km from the Laurentides Park. The Rivière Saint-Charles is found west of the city. Saint-Émile is located east of Loretteville. The name is derived from that of the religious parish of Saint-Émile. Saint-Émile's territory is 90%. The Valcartier military base is located 15 km away.
History
Saint-Émile began as a small village and has developed into a suburb of Quebec City, situated 15 km to the North. In 1993, it was incorporated as the city of Saint-Émile.
On 1 January 2002, Saint-Émile was amalgamated into Quebec City alongside the cities of Beauport, Cap-Rouge, Charlesbourg, Lac-Saint-Charles, L'Ancienne-Lorette, Loretteville, Quebec, Sainte-Foy, Sillery, Val-Bélair and Vanier as well as the municipality of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures.
