Sidney Smith Shatford
Sidney Smith Shatford, business executive (b at Hubbards, NS 1 Dec 1864; d at Halifax 8 June 1956). In partnership with his brother, he founded NS's first oil business. He started work as a hardware clerk in Halifax, and in 1885 he and his brother established an oil-importing and wholesale business with $4000 borrowed from their father. Shatford Brothers Ltd imported kerosene and lubricating oil from New York and distributed it throughout most of NS, PEI and Newfoundland. In 1894 the business was merged with competitor Joseph Bullock of Saint John under the name of Eastern Oil Co, which was purchased by Imperial Oil 1898. Sidney Shatford then headed Imperial's operations in NS until retirement in 1930.
