A solicitor is a lawyer who advises on legal problems and whose work - contracts of sale, real-estate transactions, wills and trusts - normally does not require court appearance.

A solicitor is a lawyer who advises on legal problems and whose work - contracts of sale, real-estate transactions, wills and trusts - normally does not require court appearance. The term has a distinct legal definition in England, but in Canada's common-law provinces, lawyers are called to the bar (see BARRISTER) and admitted as solicitors simultaneously. There is no exact corresponding designation under Québec civil law, where the legal profession is divided into notaires (see NOTARY) and avocats.
