Sutherland Steam Mill
The Sutherland Steam Mill, situated in Denmark, NS, is a provincial HISTORIC SITE. Most of the early sawmills in NOVA SCOTIA relied on water power, but in the 1890s, when Alexander Sutherland built this mill, steam power was rapidly replacing water power for most industrial uses. This provincial historic site reflects Nova Scotia's industrial heritage. In addition to sawing lumber, Sutherland manufactured carriages and sleighs at the mill, and produced windows and doors there too. The steam boilers and other equipment in the mill have been restored and do operate on special occasions. The mill is open to the public from early June to mid-October.
