Having received his arts and medical degrees from Cambridge (1946-50), Leeson later obtained an MD (1959) and a PhD (1971) there. He arrived in Canada in 1957 as assistant professor of anatomy at the University of Toronto. In 1963, he became professor in the anatomy department at the University of Alberta, also serving as chairman until 1983. His research on the ultrastructure of tissues gained him international recognition; he is especially well known for his textbook Histology (1966, 5th ed. 1985), which he coauthored with his twin brother Charles Roland Leeson.
