Ian R. MacLachlan

Ian MacLachlan is an economic geographer. Born and raised in Montréal, Ian obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees at Carleton University before receiving his doctorate from the University of Toronto (1990). He joined the Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge in 1989, retiring in 2015. Still an active academic, Ian’s research focuses on a variety of livestock and beef issues ranging from contemporary cattle production in Alberta to 19th century slaughterhouse reform in the United Kingdom. More recently, his work has centred on planning history, regional economic development and resource towns.
