    Steven Hillel Paikin, OC, OOnt, journalist, broadcaster, author, documentary filmmaker (born 9 June 1960 in Hamilton, ON). Steve Paikin is best known for his long career at TVO, where he serves as the host and senior editor of the public broadcaster’s flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin. He also served as chancellor of Laurentian University from 2013 to 2021. As a journalist, Paikin has been recognized for his fairness, easygoing manner, high standards, keen interviewing skills and innate curiosity on a wide variety of subjects. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013 and a Member of the Order of Ontario in 2014.

    Susan Avis Bayley Johanson (née Powell), CM, sex educator, broadcaster, nurse (born 29 July 1930 in Toronto, ON; died 28 June 2023 in Thornhill, ON). An iconic Canadian to generations of teenagers, Sue Johanson was a pioneer of sex-positive sex education. An advocate for birth control, safe sex and good sexual health, Johanson was well known for her frank, earnest and often humorous approach to sexuality. Her US TV program, Talk Sex with Sue Johanson (2002–08), was broadcast in 23 countries. She also hosted a radio call-in program and a TV program in Canada and wrote a newspaper column and three books.

    Samir Khullar (a.k.a. Sugar Sammy), comedian (born 29 February 1976 in Montreal, QC). Sugar Sammy is an award-winning multi-ethnic and multilingual comedian. He is best known for his observations about Canada’s Francophone and Anglophone communities from his vantage point as the child of immigrants who settled in Montreal. His groundbreaking 2012 bilingual tour, You're Gonna Rire, sold more than 371,000 tickets and grossed over $17 million. Sammy is also a star in France. He was hailed as the “funniest man in France” in 2017 and has been a judge on the French version of America’s Got Talent since 2018.

    Viola Léger

    Viola P. Léger, OC, ONB, senator, actor, director, teacher (born 29 June 1930 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts; died 28 January 2023 in Dieppe, NB). Viola Léger served in the Senate from 2001 to 2005. She is perhaps best known for her career as an actor and for her performance as La Sagouine in Antonine Maillet’s play of the same name. Léger performed the role 3,000 times between 1971 and 2016. Widely considered the greatest Acadian actress of all time, she was also a prominent advocate and global ambassador for Acadian people and Acadian culture. She was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la France and a Member of the Ordre des Francophones d’Amérique. She also received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in theatre.

    Anne Wheeler

    Dorothy Anne Wheeler, filmmaker, producer, director, writer (b at Edmonton 23 Sept 1946). Anne Wheeler received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Alberta in 1967 and had some experience as an actor before making her first film in 1971. She made documentaries for the National Film Board as a freelancer in the late 1970s and joined the board's Prairie region as a staff member from 1978 to 1981. From this period dates the highly acclaimed A War Story (1981), a documentary-docudrama based on Wheeler's father's diaries as a Japanese prisoner of war.

    Xavier Dolan

    Xavier Dolan (born Xavier Dolan-Tadros), CM, actor, director, writer, producer, editor, costume designer (born 20 March 1989 in Montreal, QC). A precocious practitioner of auteurist art cinema, Xavier Dolan garnered international acclaim at age 20 for his debut feature, J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother, 2009). His next four award-winning films — Les amours imaginaires (Heartbeats, 2010), Laurence Anyways (2012), Tom à la ferme (Tom at the Farm, 2013) and Mommy (2014) — were completed by the time he was 25. His sixth movie, Juste la fin du monde (It’s Only the End of the World, 2016), won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and six Canadian Screen Awards. Dolan has also directed notable music videos for Adele and won a 2022 Juno Award for “Easy On Me.” He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2019.

    Zacharias Kunuk, OC, ONu, filmmaker, carver, sculptor, visual artist (born 27 November 1957 in Kapuivik, Nunavut). An internationally acclaimed media maker, Zacharias Kunuk has played a crucial role in the redefinition of ethnographic filmmaking in Canada and has been at the forefront of the Inuit’s innovative use of broadcast technology. He is perhaps best known for his debut feature film, Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner), which won six Genie Awards (including Best Screenplay, Best Direction and Best Motion Picture) and was ranked the No. 1 Canadian film of all time in a 2015 poll conducted by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Kunuk is an Officer of the Order of Canadaand a Member of the Order of Nunavut.
