    Charles Officer

    Charles Officer, director, writer, producer, actor, cinematographer, editor, hockey player (born 28 October 1975 in Toronto, ON; died 1 December 2023 in Toronto). Charles Officer was a versatile and prolific filmmaker whose works typically focused on the experiences of Black Canadians. Initially an actor, he went on to direct, write and produce feature films, documentaries and TV series. He won four Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Drama Series and Best Direction, Drama Series for CBC’s The Porter (2022). Officer died at the age of 48 after a long illness and complications from a heart attack.

    Christie Blatchford

    Christie Blatchford, journalist, newspaper columnist, writer, broadcaster (born 20 May 1951 in Rouyn-Noranda, QC; died 12 February 2020 in Toronto, ON). Christie Blatchford was one of Canada’s best-known journalists. In a career spanning five decades, she wrote for all of Canada’s national daily newspapers — the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star and the National Post — as well as the Toronto Sun. She also published several books, including Fifteen Days: Stories of Bravery, Friendship, Life and Death from Inside the New Canadian Army (2008), which won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. Blatchford won a National Newspaper Award for her columns in 1999 and was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame in November 2019. She was a conservative writer who focused mainly on crime, human suffering and criminal justice. Her often controversial views prompted strong reactions and media responses.

    Christopher Plummer

    Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer, actor (born 13 December 1929 in Toronto, ON; died 5 February 2021 in Weston, Connecticut). A great-grandson of Prime Minister Sir John Abbott, Christopher Plummer was an international star of theatre, film and television. He was Canada’s most distinguished movie star in the classical mould — the New York Times hailed him as “the finest classical actor in America.” He took on innumerable larger-than-life roles, including Cyrano de Bergerac, King Lear, Hamlet, Rudyard Kipling, John Barrymore, and Baron von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965), one of the most popular films of all time. He won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, two Tony Awards, two Emmy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Film Independent Spirit Award, a Canadian Screen Award and a Genie Award. He received lifetime achievement awards from the Governors General’s Awards, the Canadian Screen Awards and the National Arts Club of America. A Companion of the Order of Canada, he was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and Canada's Walk of Fame.

    Dan Levy

    Daniel Joseph Levy, actor, writer, producer, director, TV host (born 9 August 1983 in Toronto, ON). Dan Levy is best known for his role as David Rose on the CBC sitcom Schitt’s Creek, a series he created and co-starred in with his father, comedy icon Eugene Levy. Schitt’s Creek is one of the most acclaimed Canadian TV series of all time. It was named Best Comedy Series at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021. It also became the first comedy series ever to win all seven of the top awards at the Primetime Emmy Awards; Levy won four — the most by a single person in one year. He has also been honoured for promoting acceptance of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

    Daniel Langlois

    Daniel Langlois, OC, COQ, animator, producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist (born 6 April 1957 in Jonquière, QC; died 2023 in Gallion, Dominica). Daniel Langlois was a pioneer in the field of computer animation. In 1997, he received a Scientific and Technical Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for developing Softimage, the industry standard in 3-D computer animation software. After selling and resigning from the company, Langlois created the Daniel Langlois Foundation, which promotes artistic and scientific research. He was then involved in various technology projects, including Montreal’s Ex Centris cinema complex, and developed an eco-conscious luxury resort on the Caribbean island of Dominica. He and his partner were found dead in Dominica under mysterious circumstances in December 2023.

    David C. Onley

    David C. Onley, 28th lieutenant-governor of Ontario (2007–14), broadcaster, writer (born 12 June 1950 in Midland, ON; died 14 January 2023). Before his appointment as Ontario's lieutenant-governor, Onley was a successful media personality and advocate for the disabled. Having contracted polio at age three, Onley was partially paralyzed from the neck down. David C. Onley was appointed Ontario's 28th lieutenant-governor on 5 September 2007, succeeding James Bartleman. On 23 September 2014, he was succeeded as lieutenant-governor by Elizabeth Dowdeswell.

    Deepa Mehta

    Deepa Mehta, OC, OOnt, director, producer, screenwriter (born 15 September 1950 in Amritsar, India). Deepa Mehta has received international acclaim for her moving and provocative films, which often explore issues of human rights and social injustice. She is perhaps best known for her epic “Elements trilogy” — Fire (1996), Earth(1998) and Water (2005). The latter was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Mehta has received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Order of Ontario and Queen’s Jubilee Medal. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for “challenging cultural traditions and bringing stories of oppression, injustice and violence to the fore.”

    Julien Christian Lutz (a.k.a. Director X, Little X), director, filmmaker, mental health advocate (born 31 October 1975 in Toronto, ON). After starting out as the protégé of music video maven Hype Williams, Director X directed the music video for “Northern Touch,” a landmark in Canadian hip hop. He has since directed more than 100 music videos for some of the biggest names in hip hop and popular music, including such iconic videos as Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious,” Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” and Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” and “Hotline Bling.” Director X has also made feature films and art installations. He was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2022.
