    John A. Hopps

    John Alexander (Jack) Hopps, OC, inventor, research scientist (born 21 May 1919 in Winnipeg, MB; died 24 November 1998 in Ottawa, ON). Early in his lengthy career at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Hopps was recruited to design a cardiac pacemaker with a team of scientists at the Banting Institute in Toronto. His invention of a portable artificial external pacemaker, designed at the NRC, was successfully tested on a dog in 1950. The creation of the device was a significant medical milestone that laid the groundwork for implantable pacemakers in humans.

    John A. Macdonald Was No Friend to Indigenous Peoples

    More than a century and a half after the formal birth of the nation he played a lead role in creating, debate continues around Sir John A. Macdonald and his government’s approach to Indigenous people in Canada. While his name has been removed from some schools and other public institutions across the country, his defenders argue that his efforts have been misunderstood or distorted. Because of his exceptional significance as the leading Father of Confederation and Canada’s first Prime Minister, the Canadian Encyclopedia commissioned essays that provide sharply different views on this issue: Below is “John A.     John Amagoalik

    John Amagoalik, OC, ONu, leader, activist, politician, writer (born 26 November 1947 in Tasialuk, QC). John Amagoalik is an Inuit leader sometimes known as John A., the Father of Nunavut (see also Fathers of Confederation; Nunavut and Confederation). His leadership and involvement helped in the creation of the territory of Nunavut on 1 April 1999. He was instrumental in the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement in 1993 and helped plan Nunavut’s government structure. Also, he lobbied the federal government to apologize and compensate Inuit for damages caused by the forced relocation of families to the High Arctic and the killing of sled dogs (see Inuit High Arctic Relocations in Canada).
