James Stickles (Primary Source)

James Stickles joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as an aero-electrician. He landed in France on D+19 (19 days after D-day, 6 June 1944) and was stationed at an airfield outside of Caen, France. He was then transferred to No. 6 Photographic Squadron, 39 Reconnaissance Wing. The squadron was stationed at Eindhoven, Holland during the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Forest), and he witnessed the atrocities committed at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The squadron was also one of the first to cross the Rhine River into Germany, following Operation VARSITY in March 1945.Please be advised that some of this veteran's photographs are of a graphic nature and may not be suitable for younger viewers. Jim Jones (Primary Source)

Jim Jones was a sergeant with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers armoured regiment in the Second World War. He landed in France on D-Day (June 6, 1944) in the afternoon and fought throughout Normandy and into the Rhineland, Germany. During the August 1944 battle for Falaise, France his tank was hit and he helped save members of his crew. Johanna Raymond (née Stadfeld) (Primary Source)

In 2012, The Memory Project interviewed Johanna Raymond (née Stadfeld), a veteran of the Canadian air force during the Cold War. Raymond was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in September 1932. She enlisted in the Canadian air force in 1951 and served until 1955, first as a fighter control operator and then as a typist. In this testimony, she recalls her family’s military history, her experience working on early warning radar systems, and her switch to clerical work. Raymond died on 5 June 2024 in Waterloo, Ontario. Please note that although Raymond refers to the DEW Line in her testimony, she probably analyzed radar information from stations on the Pinetree Line, which was in operation during her tenure with the air force.
