    Bruce McArthur Case

    Between 2010 and 2017, eight men, most of whom had ties to Toronto’s Gay Village, disappeared. The Toronto Police Service (TPS) initially dismissed the idea that a serial killer was responsible. But when more gay men went missing, the investigation became the largest in TPS history. It also involved the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other law enforcement agencies, as well as two task forces. The investigation led to the arrest of Bruce McArthur, a self-employed landscaper who had hidden the remains of his victims in planter boxes. McArthur pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. The TPS was harshly criticized for its handling of the case. As a result, a unit dedicated to the investigation of missing persons was formed.

    Brunette Island, 20 km2, is situated at the mouth of Fortune B on Newfoundland's S coast, 18 km S of Connaigre Head. The island, roughly triangular, measures 11 km E-W and 6 km N-S. A steep ridge backs the NW shore, at one point rising to 160 m.

    The first Buddhists to set foot in Canada were likely Japanese and Chinese labourers who came to work on the railroads and in the mines in the 19th century. However, it was Japanese Canadians who first established institutional Buddhism in this country. In 2006, the Parliament of Canada voted unanimously to make His Holiness the Dalai Lama an honorary Canadian citizen. In the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS), 366, 830 Canadians identified as Buddhist.

    Colonel By and the Construction of the Rideau Canal

    The following article is an editorial written by The Canadian Encyclopedia staff. Editorials are not usually updated. On September 29th of 1826 the governor of Canada, the Earl of Dalhousie, turned the first sod for construction of the lowest lock of the Rideau Canal. Later that day the participants gathered at Philemon Wright's tavern in Hull, where they indulged in a lavish dinner and the drinking of numerous toasts. One of the great engineering feats of its time was underway.
