Alan Newton Campbell

Alan Newton Campbell, professor of chemistry (b at Halifax, Eng 29 Oct 1899; d at Winnipeg 10 Nov 1987). After receiving a doctorate from King's College, London, Campbell became assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Manitoba in 1930. When he arrived, the department concentrated on teaching, but Campbell began research and founded a research school. He became head of the department in 1945. For 6 years in the 1950s he served on the National Research Council. He retired as head in 1965 but continued teaching until 1969, when he became professor emeritus. He received an honorary Doctorate of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in May 1981. Throughout his life he actively pursued research on the conductance of electrolytic solutions and the thermodynamic properties of solutions. His students, many now eminent chemists, remember him also for his love of literature, music and classical studies.
