Classical Quartet of Montreal/Quatuor classique de Montréal

Classical Quartet of Montreal/Quatuor classique de Montréal. Founded in 1968 by Arthur Garami, violinist. Robert Verebes, violist, was the only other original member remaining when the quartet disbanded in 1976. Cellist William Valleau was succeeded by Ifan Williams in 1973, while the second violin was, respectively, Gilles Baillargeon 1968-9, Adolfo Bornstein 1969-70, Luis Grinhauz 1971-4, Janice Baty 1974, and Claire Segal 1974-76. The quartet made its debut on CBC TV ('Let's Talk Music,' Montreal, March 1969) and later broadcast over 100 programs for the CBC. It performed at the JMC Orford Art Centre and the Stratford Festival. In 1974 it taped, with guest pianists, Fauré's quartets and trios for broadcast over the French network of CBC and for international broadcast on the 50th anniversary of Fauré's death. The quartet established a public concert series in 1974, playing at the Centaur Theatre.
