Ethel A. (Adams) Kinley. Educator, choir conductor, b Gladstone, near Winnipeg, 3 Jan 1887, d Winnipeg 24 Sep 1967. After teaching in Delta and Killarney, Man, she moved to Winnipeg in 1913, then taught in San Bernardino, Cal, while studying music at the University of Southern California.

Ethel A. (Adams) Kinley. Educator, choir conductor, b Gladstone, near Winnipeg, 3 Jan 1887, d Winnipeg 24 Sep 1967. After teaching in Delta and Killarney, Man, she moved to Winnipeg in 1913, then taught in San Bernardino, Cal, while studying music at the University of Southern California. She returned in 1919 to Winnipeg, where she taught music and conducted the choirs at Earl Grey School and 1928-37 at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. From 1937 until her retirement in 1947 she was supervisor of music in Winnipeg schools. Throughout her career she continued music study with such teachers as George Dodds in England and Burton Kurth, Winona Lightcap, Bernard Naylor, and Hugh Ross. An authority on the voice change in males, she founded (1925) and conducted the Winnipeg Boys' Choir under the aegis of the Winnipeg Men's Musical Club and also conducted the Junior Men's and Young Women's Musical Club choirs. She compiled the Manitoba School Song Book (Toronto 1940), Sing Hey Ho! A Songbook for Canadian Boys and Girls (Toronto 1951), and Fundamentals for Singers (Toronto 1953). Young musicians who came under her influence and later went on to high accomplishment included Beth Douglas, Chester Duncan, Frederick Grinke, Glen Harrison, Lola MacQuarrie, David Martin, Glen Pierce, and Ross Pratt.
