Hund, Frederic

Hund, Frederic. Music printer, publisher, piano builder, fl 1816-24. In August 1818 Hund advertised in the Quebec Mercury as a music engraver and pianoforte maker, repairman, and tuner recently settled in the city. In the same ad he listed The Berlin Waltz, as his 2-page folio publication and announced the impending issue of a collection of New German Waltzes in sets of 12. Copies have not been located of either publication; they would be the earliest sheet music (as distinct from volumes of music) to have been published in Canada.

Hund is identified as engraver of Airs notés des cantiques, the separate tunebook for Daulé's Le Nouveau Recueil de cantiques a l'usage du diocese de Québec (1819), and this publication does survive. Maria Calderisi calls it 'the earliest known example of punched engraving in Canada'.

As a piano builder and music retailer Hund was a partner in the firm of Frederick Hund & Gottlieb Seebold until its dissolution in 1824. Seebold later worked in Montreal.
