Herbert Barrow

Herbert (Benjamin) Barrow. B London 22 Sep 1875, d Toronto 31 Dec 1955. The son of a musician, Barrow studied viola and French horn at the GSM, winning the school prize for viola in 1898.

Herbert (Benjamin) Barrow. B London 22 Sep 1875, d Toronto 31 Dec 1955. The son of a musician, Barrow studied viola and French horn at the GSM, winning the school prize for viola in 1898. After 12 years with His Majesty's Scots Guards he moved in 1913 with his family to Toronto, where he played viola in the Royal Alexandra Theatre orchestra and, until 1918, French horn in the Welsman TSO. He was principal horn 1927-32 of the TSO. He served 1914-18 as bandmaster of the Queen's Own Rifles and in 1922 was assistant conductor of the Anglo-Canadian Leather Company Band in Huntsville, Ont. In Toronto he owned and operated Barrow Music Supplies.
