John M. (May) Moncrieff. Bass, b Winnipeg 10 Mar 1891, d Windsor, Ont, 19 Feb 1966. After studies with Otto Morando in Toronto and Vladimir Rosing in Rochester and a concert tour of Canada, he made his stage debut in 1926 in Chautauqua, NY. Subsequently he toured 1926-30 with the American Opera, singing 15 roles; the most successful was Mephisto in Faust, which he sang 133 times. In the 1930s he sang on NBC radio in New York. Declining health forced his retirement, and in later years he led a reclusive life on Pelee Island in Lake Erie.
