Lise Daoust

Lise Daoust. Flutist, teacher, b Montreal, 15 May 1950; premier prix flute, sight reading (Cons d'Orléans) 1972. After studying at the CMM, she pursued further studies at the Cons d'Orléans, France in 1972 and won the Concours Léopold Bellan de Paris that year. She was admitted to the Paris Cons, where she studied 1972-5 under Alain Marion, Christian Lardé and Jean-Pierre Rampal who, when referring to her in a letter 10 Oct 1976, wrote that 'her sensitivity and musical intelligence place her in the leading group of her generation'. She returned to Quebec in 1976 after having been second flute at the Orchestre des Concerts Pasdeloup and having taught the flute 1975-6 class at the Cons de Poissy. In 1980 she started teaching at the University of Montreal. Daoust has been a frequent guest soloist at the SMCQ and at the CBC where she performed on more than 15 radio and television broadcasts in 1991. In addition to three European tours (1980, 1983, 1987), she took a training session at IRCAM in 1986. Her repertoire includes works of all periods and styles but she particularly excels in the field of contemporary music. In 1988 she won the Prix de musique contemporaine Flandre-Québec for her contribution to contemporary music, and in 2009, in recognition of her contribution to Canadian new music, she was named a Canadian Music Centre ambassador. She has premiered works by Canadian composers such as Alain Gagnon (Trois solos d'un personnage, 1977) and René Lussier (Zone grise, 1990). In 1990 she gave the North-American premiere of Stockhausen's Kathinkas Gesang als Luzifers Requiem for flute and tape, a piece that she had studied with the composer and the flutist Kathinka Pasveer. After this program, the critic Claude Gingras wrote that 'she seemingly has no technical difficulties whatsoever and, better still, her playing possesses the musicality, expression and simplicity that are characteristic of the complete artist' (Montreal La Presse, 5 Feb 1990).
