Erickson, Lloyd

Lloyd (Reinhold) Erickson. Choir conductor, administrator, b Tompkins, near Swift Current, Sask, 11 Aug 1921; ARCT 1952, LTCL 1957, B ED fine arts (Alberta) 1958, MA (Columbia) 1963. He studied piano with Jean Cotton and voice with Odette de Foras in Calgary. He began teaching music in Calgary schools in 1947 and was supervisor of music 1972-83 for the Calgary school board. Erickson has been choirmaster at Pleasant Heights United Church 1952-60, music director for the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede 1964-73, and founder and director of Calgary's Young Canadians 1967-73 and the Lloyd Erickson Singers 1964-74. He became minister of music at Central United Church in 1960 and was chorusmasterof the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus 1970-5 and 1977-9. In 1973 he trained and conducted an RCMP chorus from Regina which toured 40 Canadian cities as part of the RCMP Revue. He founded the Alberta Choral Directors' Association and served 1971-5 as president. In 1990 Erickson was a founding member of the music advisory board of the Glenbow Museum, a vocal consultant to the Academy at Mount Royal College, and an examiner for the WBM.
