Robert Charlton Bayley. Educator, organist, choir conductor, composer, b Buctouche, near Moncton, NB, 4 Apr 1913; B SC (New Brunswick) 1934, LTCL 1935, L MUS (McGill) 1938, B ED (New Brunswick) 1970. His teachers included Sister M. Gabriel, and William Smith, (in Fredericton), and (in England 1938-9) Ernest Bullock (organ), Harold Darke, Sir Percy Buck, Gordon Phillips, and Sir Sydney Nicholson. He was supervisor of school music in Fredericton 1945-6 and in Moncton 1946-63, also serving briefly (1963) as provincial supervisor of music the with the department of education, before joining the New Brunswick Teachers College in 1963 and the University of New Brunswick 1973-77. He was music editor 1947-50 of the New Brunswick Educational Review. Bayley has been organist-choirmaster in various New Brunswick churches, and also the founder and conductor 1933-9 of the Cecilian Singers in Fredericton and conductor of the CNR Glee Club, the New Brunswick Teachers' College Choir, and the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Education Choir. He has composed over 60 works in a conservative idiom, mainly choral, but also for violin and piano, and one work for saxophone. some published by BMI Canada (now Berandol), and Harris, and Hope. He composed choral works commissioned by the CMEA for performance by the Hillsborough Girls Choir.at the 1983 convention held at Mount Allison University. In 1991, retired in Fredericton, he continued to compose.
