Warren, William Henry

William Henry Warren. Organist, teacher, composer, b USA, d Montreal 19 Dec 1856. He emigrated to Toronto, becoming organist at St James' Cathedral in 1834. In 1838 he was appointed organist at Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal, where he remained until his death just nine days after a fire destroyed the cathedral. During his years as a music teacher and organist in Montreal, he would often aid his brother Samuel Russell in the fabrication of his pipe organs.

Warren was also listed as a professor and teacher of music and as a tuner of pianos in the Montreal Directory, 1843-4, and he taught piano at the boarding school for girls run by the Congregation of Notre Dame.

In 1848 A Selection from the Psalms of David for Morning and Evening Service; together with Chants and Responses by Warren was published by Lovell and Gibson of Montreal. A song by Warren, 'Love me not with fancy,' is published in CMH vol 3.
