Barrister, member of legal profession in England who has exclusive right of audience in high and superior courts. Usually retained by a solicitor, barristers have unique legal status. In Canada the term is used informally to describe lawyers who appear in higher courts, but all Canadian common lawyers are both barristers and solicitors, although some provincial legislation refers to the 2 categories. In Québec Civil Law the distinction is made between notaires (Notary) and avocats.
