Coron, Charles-François

Charles-François Coron. Organist, tailor, notary, b St-François-de-Sales (Ile Jésus, later part of Laval, near Montreal) 21 Dec 1704, d there 13 Feb 1767. A comparison of extant documents suggests that there may have been two persons by this name. The tailor and notary were the same person, but the identity of the organist is not beyond doubt. The organist is believed to have held a position 1722-34 at the Montreal parish church of Notre-Dame. Documents described by Lapalice provide interesting light on an 18th-century musician's salary: for 20 months of work 1722-3 Coron was paid 83 livres and 15 sols. In 1725 and 1726 he received a 'capot' and a 'veste de Mazamet' (Mazamet: French town renowned for its leather and wool production), and in 1727 he was given a choice between 45 livres in cash or 50 livres in merchandise.
