Parker, Mary Ann
Mary Ann (Elizabeth) Parker. Musicologist, teacher, b Toronto 21 Nov 1951; ARCT piano (1971), BA (Toronto) 1972, M MUS (Southern Illinois) 1976, PH D musicology (ESM, Rochester) 1982. Her PH D thesis, completed under the supervision of Alfred Mann, was on 'Handel's Latin Psalm settings.' She taught 1981-2 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and in 1982 began teaching at the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto.
Parker received major grants 1989-90 and 1990-2 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to fund an Italian Libretto Project at the University of Toronto. Her publications include G.F. Handel: A Guide to Research (New York, 1988); articles about Handel's choral works; and review-articles of new books about Handel. At various conferences and meetings she has presented papers about Handel, 18th century music, and the libretto project. She has contributed to the New Grove Dictionary of Opera and has also done research on Italian oratorios of the mid-18th century.
