Melbourne Records

Melbourne Records. Established by Rodeo Records Ltd, it began issuing country and pop records in 1966. Its early roster included Ralph Carlson, Bob King, the Rainvilles, the Rhythm Pals, Hugh Scott, and the Stampeders. In 1973 it was converted into a concert music label, with BMI Canada initially supplying A&R assistance. Melbourne was taken over in 1977 by Waterloo, which in turn sold the catalogue in 1986 to the Canadian Music Centre. Among Melbourne's later releases were recordings of Harry Somers' The Fool, R. Murray Schafer's Loving and Threnody, and electroacoustic music by Jean Piché, Barry Truax, and others. Melbourne also issued albums by Robert Bauer, Davis Joachim, Antonin Kubálek, William Kuinka, the MSO, the Orford String Quartet, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Christopher Weait, the York Winds, and David Zafer. Its final production, Piché's Heliograms, was released in 1982.
