Music Education Council of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association
Music Education Council of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association. Formed 23 May 1959 in Fredericton as the New Brunswick Music Educators' Association. It became a subject council of the NBTA in 1962, resumed its independent status for two years (1971-3), and then rejoined the NBTA. The council became affiliated with the CMEA in 1974. Full membership is available only to school music teachers, but associate membership is granted to private and university teachers. In 1990 there were 131 regular members, 19 complimentary members, and 2 associate members. Conferences are held in spring and autumn, and a newsletter, Accents, is published twice a year. Presidents have been Thomas Morrison 1959-60, 1970-1, Neil Michaud 1960-1, Douglas Major 1961-2, Winnifred Ball 1963-5, Margaret Fairweather 1965-7, Lorne Poitras 1967-8, Walter Ball 1968-70, Carolyn Nielsen 1971-4, Joy Broad 1974-6, Shirley Sutherland 1976-8, Brenda Trafford 1978-83, Gerry Stephenson 1983-5, Carolyn Kolls 1985-7, Don Bossé 1987-9, and Peter McLaughlin 1989-91, succeeded by Hugh Kennedy.
