Vancouver Pro Musica

Vancouver Pro Musica. Composers' co-operative founded in 1984 to arrange venues for the performance of modern, local works chiefly by young, emerging composers. It has received funding from the Canada Council, the province of British Columbia, the city of Vancouver, and, at times, the Hamber and Leon and Thea Koerner foundations, as well as assistance from the Vancouver New Music Society. Its first president was Paul Nicholls (1984-6); he was assisted by Jenine Oye. The organization was dissolved in 1986 and reformed in 1987, with Mark Armanini as president; he was succeeded in 1990 by Chris Miller. In the 1984-5 season, performances were given at the University of British Columbia and at the Arts Club (Vancouver); later locations have included the Firehall Theatre, Western Front, and Glass Slipper (all in Vancouver). Composers whose works have been performed include Mark Armanini, Rick Carswell, Coat Cook, Paul Dolden, Arne Eizenfeldt, Martin Gotfrit, Ken Newby, and Michael O'Neill.
