John Shiwak

John Shiwak (Sikoak), Inuit hunter, trapper, soldier (born February or March 1889 in Cul-de-Sac, near Rigolet, Labrador; died 21 November 1917 near Masnières, France). Shiwak was one of more than 60 men from Labrador who joined the military during the First World War. He went on to become one of the best scouts and snipers on the Western Front.

Josée Kurtz

Marie Thérèse Josée Kurtz (née Boisclair), naval officer, rear admiral, maritime commander (born 2 October 1968 in Joliette, QC). A career naval officer, Kurtz has achieved many firsts as a woman in both the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Kurtz was the first woman to command a major warship (HMCS Halifax, 2009), Standing NATO Maritime Group (SNMG2, 2019), and RCN coastal formation (Maritime Forces Atlantic, 2023). Kurtz was also the first female commandant of the Royal Military College (2021).

Joseph Benjamin Keeper

Joseph Benjamin “Joe” Keeper, world-class athlete and war hero of the Norway House Cree Nation (born 21 January 1886 in Walker Lake, MB; died 29 September 1971 in Winnipeg, MB). Keeper competed at the 1912 Stockholm Summer Olympics, where he participated in the 5,000 and 10,000 m track events. Keeper later served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War and received the Military Medal for his actions at the front. After his death, Keeper was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1977 and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

Joseph Whiteside Boyle

Joseph Whiteside Boyle (born 6 November 1867 in Toronto, ON; died 14 April 1923 in Hampton Hill, Middlesex, United Kingdom). Nicknamed Klondike Joe, Boyle founded a gold mining company and became a millionaire in the aftermath of the Klondike gold rush. During the First World War, he equipped a machine gun unit and was a spy with the British secret service in Russia and Romania. He also reorganized the Russian military supply network, rescued Romanian prisoners of war and became the confidant and possibly lover of Queen Marie of Romania.

Joshua Peter Kutryk, astronaut, fighter pilot, engineer (born 21 March 1982 in Fort Saskatchewan, AB). Colonel Kutryk is an active member of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and has served as a test pilot and fighter pilot. In 2017, Kutryk was chosen by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) for astronaut training and in 2020 he officially became a Canadian astronaut. No earlier than the beginning of 2025, he will serve on Starliner-1, a six-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

Field Marshall Julian Hedworth George Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy, Commander of the Canadian Corps from 1915 to 1917 and Governor General of Canada from 1921 to 1926 (born 11 September 1862 in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom; died 6 June 1935 in Essex, United Kingdom). Byng led the Canadian Corps to victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge during the First World War. As governor general, he is best known for his role in the King-Byng Affair, when he formally refused Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s advice to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election.

Junius Lyman Edward Hokan, pilot (born 4 March 1922 in St. Catharines, ON; died 26 September 1942 in the English Channel). Hokan was likely the first Black-Canadian commissioned officer and fighter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He served his country with distinction in the Second World War but was killed when his plane crashed on the way back to England after a mission.

Ken Money

Kenneth Eric Money, astronaut, air force pilot, physiologist, inventor, lecturer, author, Olympic athlete (born 4 January 1935 in Toronto, ON; died 6 March 2023 in Toronto, ON). Dr. Ken Money was one of the original six Canadians selected to join the Canadian astronaut corps in 1983 (see Canadian Space Agency). He was a pioneer in the study of the effects of space travel on the human body. He published many scientific articles and made contributions to the World Book Encyclopedia. In addition to his extensive research contributions, Money distinguished himself as an athlete and competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
