    Har Gobind Khorana

    Har Gobind Khorana, scientist (born 9 January 1922 in Raipur, India; died 9 November 2011 in Concord, Massachusetts). Beginning in 1952, Khorana undertook research in organic chemistry at the British Columbia Research Council (see Chemistry). After moving to the United States, he was jointly awarded the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Nirenberg “for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis.” (See also Nobel Prizes and Canada.)

    Hardolph Wasteneys, professor of biochemistry (b at Richmond, Eng Apr 1881; d at Toronto 1 Feb 1965). As a boy Wasteneys went to Australia and found employment in government laboratories dealing with water purification. He moved to California about 1909 to study this subject further.

    Henry Taube, FRSC, chemist, professor (born 30 November 1915 in Neudorf, SK; died 16 November 2005 in Stanford, California). In 1983, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Taube the Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for his work on the mechanisms of electron transfer reactions, especially in metal complexes.” (See also Nobel Prizes and Canada; Chemistry.)

    James Bertram Collip

    James Bertram Collip, biochemist, educator, co-discoverer of insulin (born 20 November 1892 in Belleville, ON; died 19 June 1965 in London, ON). Collip is perhaps best recognized for his work into endocrinological research. He was one of the first to isolate the parathyroid hormone. He also contributed to the discovery of insulin in 1922.

    John Charles Polanyi, CC, OOnt, PC, FRS, FRSC, chemist, professor (born 23 January 1929 in Berlin, Germany). In 1986, John Polanyi was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (see Nobel Prizes and Canada; Chemistry). In addition to this achievement, he was the founding chairman (1960-78) of the Canadian Pugwash Group.
