    Leo Yaffe, OC, FRSC, educator, nuclear scientist, university administrator (born 6 July 1916 in Devil's Lake, North Dakota; died 26 May 1997 in Montreal, QC). Yaffe was an authority in nuclear chemistry and throughout his career he advocated for the peaceful use of atomic energy (see Nuclear Energy). He has been the recipient of many honours and awards.

    Leone Norwood Farrell

    Leone Norwood Farrell, biochemist and microbiologist (born 13 April 1904 in Monkland, Ontario; died 24 September 1986 in Toronto). Farrell was a pioneer in the development of vaccines. Most notably, her “Toronto Method” made possible the large-scale production of the Salk polio vaccine in the early 1950s. Farrell’s polio vaccine work followed innovations in the production of pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine, as well as penicillin.

    Leonora Howard King

    Leonora Howard King, physician, missionary (born 17 March 1851 in Lansdowne, Canada West; died 30 June 1925 in Beidaihe, Qinhuangdao, China). King was a pioneering Canadian physician and medical missionary, widely recognized as the first Canadian doctor to work in China. A recipient of the Order of the Double Dragon, King was likely the very first Western woman to become a Qing Dynasty mandarin.

    Lillian Dyck

    Lillian Eva Quan Dyck, OC, scholar, feminist, senator, advocate for Indigenous rights (born 24 August 1945 in North Battleford, SK). Lillian Dyck was the first Indigenous woman in Canada to earn a PhD in science. She was also the first Indigenous female senator and the first Chinese Canadian senator. During her time in the Senate, she was part of several actions to improve life for Indigenous people in Canada. This includes work on criminal justice and Indigenous education reform, and bills to reinstate Indian Status to women who had lost it based on sexist laws. Dyck was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2021.

Trained in plant pathology, but interested in the taxonomy of vascular plants, Cinq-Mars initiated and encouraged continued development of floristic studies at Laval.

    Loris Shano Russell

    Loris Shano Russell, palaeontologist (born 21 April 1904 in Brooklyn, New York; died 6 July 1998 in Toronto, ON). Over the course of his career, Russell served as a palaeontologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, as professor of geology at the University of Toronto, and in various roles at the National Museums of Canada and the Royal Ontario Museum. Russell was among the first to suggest that dinosaurs might have been warm-blooded, his most significant contribution to the field of palaeontology.

    Louis Deveau

    Louis Edouard Deveau, O.C., O.N.S, P.ENG, L.L.D. (Hon.), businessman and advocate (born 13 October 1931 in Salmon River, Digby County, NS). Deveau is the founder of Acadian Seaplants Limited, a company that specializes in the cultivation, manufacturing and processing of seaweeds for plant, animal and human use. (See also Aquaculture; Biotechnology.) Deveau became a leading figure in the modern seaweed industry and is recognized for promoting research and sustainable development in the field. The recipient of numerous awards and honours, Deveau is also recognized for his lifelong efforts to support and promote Acadian culture and French language education in Nova Scotia (see Acadian French; French Language in Canada).
