Le Projet Mémoire a interviewé Charles Laking, un ancien combattant de la Première Guerre mondiale. L’enregistrement (et la transcription) qui suit est un extrait de cette entrevue. Charles Laking est né le 21 février 1899 à Campbellville en Ontario, et il est décédé le 26 novembre 2005 à Toronto. En 1917, à l’âge de 18 ans, il s’est enrôlé dans l’Artillerie de campagne canadienne, à Guelph en Ontario, contre la volonté de son père qui était un pasteur méthodiste. (Voir Armée canadienne et Corps expéditionnaire canadien.) Charles Lanking a servi en France et en Belgique comme signaleur et il a été libéré de l’armée le 27 mai 1919. Après la guerre, il a travaillé dans l’industrie du bois. En 1941, il a repris la compagnie Danforth Wallboard and Insulation Ltd., et il a pris sa retraite en 1965. À son décès le 26 novembre 2005, à l’âge de 106 ans, il faisait partie des cinq derniers anciens combattants de la Première Guerre mondiale restant au Canada. Charles Laking a reçu la Légion d’honneur française et la médaille du jubilé d’or.
