Roald Amundsen, arctic explorer (b at Sarpsborg, Norway 16 July 1872; d between Norway and Spitsbergen 18 June 1928). Amundsen went to sea as a young man. Determined to navigate the NORTHWEST PASSAGE, he purchased the Gjoa, readied it for arctic waters and embarked in 1903.

Robert Baird McClure, CM, OOnt, medical missionary, moderator United Church of Canada (born 23 November 1900 in Portland, OR; died 10 November 1991 in Toronto, ON). As a medical missionary, McClure provided medical care and services in numerous countries, including China, Egypt and India. He was elected a lay moderator of the United Church of Canada in 1968. McClure received numerous honours and awards in recognition of his services.

Robert (Bob) Brent Thirsk, OC, OBC, engineer, astronaut (born 17 August 1953 in New Westminster, BC). In 1983, Robert Thirsk was one of six Canadians selected by the National Research Council to join the Canadian astronaut corps (see Canadian Space Agency). In 2009, he became the first Canadian astronaut to take part in a long-duration mission while on-board the International Space Station (ISS). In addition to his career as an astronaut, Thirsk has served as Vice-President of Public, Government and Institute Affairs for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2012-14) and was the University of Calgary’s 13th chancellor.

Robert Bruce Salter, CC, OOnt, FRSC, orthopedic surgeon, university professor (born 15 December 1924 in Stratford, ON; died 10 May 2010 in Toronto, ON). One of the most respected and best-known orthopedic surgeons in the world, Salter lectured in 35 countries and was recognized for innovative methods of orthopedic treatment, including the Salter operation for children and young adults with abnormal hip joints.

Robert Foulis, inventor, civil engineer, painter (born 5 May 1796 in Glasgow, Scotland; died 26 January 1866 in Saint John, NB). Robert Foulis is known as the inventor of the world’s first steam-operated fog alarm, which was installed on Partridge Island in 1859. While Foulis never patented or even profited from his life-saving innovation, his invention assisted fogbound mariners for over a century.

Robert George Ferguson, physician (b at Joliette, ND 12 Sept 1883; d at Regina 1 Mar 1964). Ferguson studied arts, theology and medicine at the University of Manitoba and in 1917 became medical superintendent of the Saskatchewan Anti-tuberculosis League at Fort Qu'Appelle.
